The Meaning of the Cedar: Why Lebanese Wear It Close to the Heart |
Miniz JewelryFor Lebanese people everywhere, the cedar is more than a tree. It is the green heart of the flag, a symbol of strength and survival, and a quiet way of saying “this is where I come from.”
The cedar on the flag
Since independence in 1943, the Lebanese flag has carried a green cedar between two red bands. The cedar stands for strength, holiness and endurance — a tree that grows slowly, lives for centuries and stays green through every winter.
A tree from ancient times
The cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) appears again and again in ancient texts. In the Bible, the Psalms say that “the righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon” (Psalm 92:12), and cedar wood from Lebanon was famously used in building King Solomon’s temple. The Phoenicians, too, built their ships from it.
The Cedars of God
High in the mountains of the north, the ancient grove known as the Cedars of God (Arz el-Rab) survives above the Qadisha Valley. Together, the valley and the forest are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site — one of the last places where these old trees still stand.
Why we wear the cedar
For the many Lebanese living abroad, a cedar pendant is a piece of home that travels with them. It is a common gift for graduations, new beginnings, Independence Day and for anyone leaving the country — a reminder that roots stay with you.
